Hampshire Winners at the British Chess Championship 2019

In the English Chess Championships held at the Riviera International Centre at Torquay Mark Cleary of Southampton obtained the excellent score of 6 points out of 9 with 5 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses in the Major Open and has now qualified for the Open section of next year’s championship.

Also in the major open Fareham’s Matt Chapman obtained 5 points out of 9.

In the section for players with an ELO grade of under 2050 Joel Bird formerly of Southampton University and now with Muswell Hill finished equal first, while Stephen Jones of Basingstoke finished third in the blitz competition.  In the weekender Atkins James Poulton formerly of Fareham finished second equal.
