In the Open section of the Chiltern League Hampshire were beaten 6.5-5.5 by Buckinghamshire with a defaulted board being effectively the difference between the teams. However in view of the fact that Hampshire had a lower average grade than their opponents the result was a creditable one.. Hampshire’s winners were Mark Cleary, Tim Chapman and Chris Priest.
The Hampshire team for players graded under 150 were beaten by Oxfordshire with a disappointing return of only 1.5 points from the top nine boards where the teams were even in terms of grading playing a major part in Hampshire’s defeat. Hampshire’s winners were Peter Dallas, Ewart Smith, Chris Priest, David Culliford, and Philip Ware, with James Barnett winning by default.
In the Southampton Chess League Hamble A moved level with Fareham A in terms of match points, but behind on game points at the top of division 1 with a 3-2 win against Southampton A.
