Part of a series of featured games by Hampshire players. If you would like to see your game published on the website, consider annotating it or adding some context to the game, eg. ‘played in a recent county match, etc’. The featured game is Joe Coburn versus Chris Smith played at the Hampshire Congress Major Tournament in 2016. The French Winawer may often be viewed as drawish due to the early release of Black’s dark-squared Bishop, however, this view was not supported by John Watson in his classic book ‘Play the French’.

This interesting game sees White play 4. Bd3 viewed by Watson as the main try but one which has scored poorly at the higher levels of Correspondence Chess and also poorly in 2016/17 at above 2500 elo level.
