Saturday 19th May was a lovely sunny day, just right for a Royal Wedding and the FA Cup Final but not for our Under 140 team’s County Championship quarter-final against Worcestershire. We typically do well on grey days and maybe the Sun was our undoing on Saturday.
Watchfield Village Hall was a very pleasant venue with plenty of space in a quiet village just North-East of Swindon. It was easy to navigate to but there was a half-hour delay due to a couple of accidents on the A34. Tea, coffee and biscuits were in plentiful supply (so I ate more biscuits than I should have).
The time limit was longer than usual and we also had an official Arbiter to look after us. The two teams of 16 were evenly matched with the same average grade, 121, but this was not reflected in the final score. Hampshire lost 4.5-11.5 (+1, =7, -8), a comprehensive defeat.
Well done to Jonathan Young our sole winner.
Now we must wait another year before we can revive our glory days of winning this championship 3 times.
