Summary

There was a distinctive split in Division Four, between the top three and the bottom three teams. The turning point in the chase for the top spot was probably the University C win against Southampton D in the first half of the season. This 3 - 2 win was enough to gain the promotion spot, despite a loss to Eastleigh Railway D.

A lot of players in this division had similar names, so I may have got a few mixed up, there are a lot of George's and a few Mo's out there - so apologies for any mistakes. Also, due to the number of ungraded players, the grading performances are rough estimates and a few have been left out due to the number of ungraded v ungraded games. Don't worry, the results on the Hampshire Web-site are not used for official grading purposes!

This season also saw three D teams, with University and Southampton joining Eastleigh Railway in entering four teams. This is a good achievement, as this helps the league to maintain its strength.

D team Captain, Malcolm Clarke probably set a record, on the number of players used by one team in a season. Malcolm managed to use 13 players this season and the same team was never used more than once during the season.

This enabled everyone who wanted to play league chess to get a game, which was the main point of entering the D team this season. As well as this, the team was very competitive, only losing the three matches and scoring over 50% in game points.

Looking at the performances in division four, you have to look deeper than grading performance, so Tony Aldridge's 6 wins from 9 games was impressive, as was Graham Payne's unbeaten season.

Eastleigh Railway will continue to field a D team next season, time will tell if Malcolm can get even more players out!

Eastleigh WMC continue to field a huge number of the George family and this season there was also a George playing for University C (at least one).  Eastleigh WMC continued to have problems fulfilling their fixtures and defaulted two matches and three games this season.

Charlie George had a good season, scoring one more win than losses, but Eastleigh WMC would probably done a bit better if they got Mike Henbury to play more than two games - which he won.

A good season for Ordnance Survey B, as they finished one place higher than last season and had three wins and a draw from the ten matches.

K.Plumridge scored 80%, which was an excellent debut in the league and Marshall Painter also scored well. Ordnance Survey probably need a slightly stronger top two boards, as the majority of the points came from the lower, with the team seeming to have players of the same strength on all boards.
