Summary

Division Four was all about two teams, with University C and Winchester C both trying to get the promotion spot. Both teams beat each other in their home fixture and were held to draws by Stoneham D in one of the other matches. Therefore it came down to game points, where Winchester's heavy scoring against the other teams proved the key factor.

Stoneham were pleased to put a D team in this season, as we had a couple of new players and also the old British Rail B team players available. This was the first D team in the Southampton league for quite a while and was a welcome addition. I think that Southampton will also be entering a D team next season, which is another good sign for the league.

The analysis for Division Four gets difficult, especially working out the grades, This is as the teams have a lot of ungraded players, so where this proved difficult I have not put a grading performance down. You do get an indication of who has done well though, with the percentages and also where new players have beaten established players, as I have some idea of the strength of these players.

Although Eastleigh WMC lost all their games, this is not an indication of their true strength. They were hampered by defaults and 4 players who failed to score any points from the 13 games they played in. The players that did score points are useful players, especially Nobby George and Mike Henbury. What they need is a bit more organising and maybe one or two of the other players to improve, as this will bring the points in.

That said, they are a very welcoming club, even allowing Stoneham to play two games at their venue when we could not play at our own club. Nobby George had the best performance, only losing one of his six games and playing all but one game on top board. This was another thing that Eastleigh WMC got right this season, as thier players have not always played in the order of strength, which they did do this season.

Ordnance Survey B had a strange mix of players in their B team, with some very strong players on the top boards and some much weaker players on the bottom boards. As nobody played all eight games, the teams put out were of varying standards. This was in evidence in the two games against Stoneham D, with the team that won 3½ - 1½ having only one player who played in the 4½ - ½ loss against the same team.

The win against Stoneham D went with the two wins against Eastleigh WMC, which gave Ordnance Survey B 6 points from their 8 matches. J.Barrera had an excellent season, scoring 80%. J.Pedro only played a couple of games, which he won. He then went on to play two games for the A team scoring a win and a draw. I am sure Ordnance Survey will be hoping that he will be able to play more games next season

It was a bit of a challenge for Stoneham to field a D team, but Malcolm Clarke offering to be a non playing captain made it all possible, as he brought his considerable captain's experience to the role. It also helped that two new players joined the club and were keen to play matches.  Both Dan and Paul played well, with Dan probably having the best performance from all the D team players.

I am sure that Stoneham D (or Eastleigh Railway D) will continue to improve next season, as both new players will have more experience of the league set up and ex British Rail players who could not play due to the change in club night will be available for more games.

University C just lost out on the top position to Winchester C on game points. Although missing out on the top position, this was an excellent season for University C, as the previous season they struggled to put a team together. On the four times that they did put a team together they only scored four game points and no match points. Therefore to turn this around like they did shows that Chess at the University is on the up again.

Individually, a number of players had excellent seasons, namely Graham Burgess, B.McManus, M.Devan and B.Soares. If these continue to play for the C team I am sure that University will progress further next season.

An excellent season by Winchester C, deservedly gave them the Division Four title. Although they lost to University C, they also beat the same team by a much larger margin in their other match.  All players managed at least one win and R.Patterson had the distinction of winning all four games he played in. At this stage I am unsure what is happening with the Divisions, but Winchester will struggle to have two teams in Division Three and University will also find it difficult to have two teams in Division Four.

For this reason, it may well be that Winchester C do not take the promotion spot, allowing University to move up to Division Three. This ensures that both teams can continue to have a team in Division three and four.
