The C team's second match of the season against
Ordnance Survey B was nearly a non-starter ... twice ! Not only did the OS
captain have to postpone what was originally their home fixture, but also we had
a last minute change of venue for the rearranged match at our place on December
3rd. Crabwood House, the white building where OS play their home matches, has
been closed for security reasons since September 11th. I agreed that we should
rearrange the fixture to be our home match, with OS hosting their home match
against us in March. However, due to the "duelling rock bands" at
Breezers, we were faced with the prospect of another postponement or finding an
alternative venue. I offered to play the match at my house and both teams were
happy with this. We had a pleasant evening, both sides being appropriately
lubricated by Hampshire Brewery's finest ales from Romsey and ultimately, we ran
out 5-0 winners.
Sam was first to finish on board 2, defeating Joss
Goold with his customary display of accurate, forcing chess. Rob Sims was next,
with a comfortable win against Crawford White on 5, although this match looked
even well into the late middle game. Keven Lamb played a waiting game against
Marshall Painter, whom I played last year, eventually winning well. Patrick
Pavey then weighed in with a win against one of the Drew brothers, John - their
captain. I was last to finish, only managing to gain material in the endgame,
having held a positional advantage for much of the game.
