Summary

There was always some doubt about the teams that were going to be in Division Four this season, due to the ongoing trend of less and less teams / players in the Southampton League. In the end only Southampton D were the only team that failed to materialise, although Southampton Chess Club had always said that their participation was doubtful.

Eastleigh Unity proved too strong for the other teams this season, which was probably expected after their strong showing last season (Division Four had a very strong Passed Pawn B and Winchester B teams last season).

Hopefully there will be enough teams in the league to have a Division Four next season, although at the AGM there was some doubt about University being able to field three teams. Hopefully Southampton can manage to get someone to run a D team, as Southampton seem to have enough players to field four teams.

Eastleigh Unity C managed to field the same team for all but two of their games, when John Zastapilo was used as a reserve, One of these was when he was ineligible, due to a misunderstanding. This did not stop Eastleigh Unity only dropping two match points all season.

Although all the players played well, Rob Sims performance stands out, as he managed to win all five of his games, which is a great result for anyone, let alone someone who only plays 5 - 7 games a year. Keven Lamb and David Culliford also scored over 75% this season.

Eastleigh Unity had problems with their venue this year, hence the move to Stoneham Park Sports and Social Club halfway through the season. This did not stop C team captain David Culliford  playing a match at an unusual venue, his house! The was a great success, with a 5 nil win against Ordnance Survey C (see David's match report).

David's match reports were an added bonus this year and would certainly be something I would like other clubs to do, as it adds a human touch to the match results.

I would expect Eastleigh Unity C to do reasonably well in Division Three next season, as the team's make up is of players that have had much higher grades in the past and they also play as a team. In addition, one of the problems in past has seasons has been the lack of players; this seems to have been corrected this season though, as defaulted games have not been a issue.

Apart from a loss to Ordnance Survey C, Winchester C only dropped points to division winners Eastleigh Unity C, who they also managed to draw with in one game. With the exception of one player, everyone scored over 50%, with the best results coming from R.Collins, B.Jack and D.Green.

Ordnance Survey were helped tremendously by C.Newby, who was the highest graded regular player in Division Four this season. John Drew and Tony Cornick also performed reasonably well this season.

I don't know if Eastleigh WMC should change their name to the George team, as they now have five members of the George family playing in the team! This must make it confusing for the graders, especially as they don't seem to play in any strict board order.

Nobby George was their strongest player this season and two of his four wins were against the division champs, Eastleigh Unity C. Unfortunately for Nobby he played against WInchester C and lost both times, otherwise he may have managed 100%

It's a shame that Eddy Pitt only played the one game this season, as he has been playing in the Southampton League for as long as I can remember and is certainly one of its characters. Everyone has an Eddy Pitt story!

One of the reasons Division Four continues, it due to clubs like Eastleigh WMC, as although the standard is not the highest, they enjoy their chess and always make good opponents - hence the friendlies against Eastleigh Unity C.

To be honest University C did struggle this season. This said, they did manage to get a team out for the majority of matches, but never scored more than one point. J.Rundi did manage 100% though!
