Summary

A very tight division, with only 2 points separating the top three teams, in fact Gosport C managed to win the league, despite losing three matches and scoring less match points than both Victory and Emsworth C. This was probably down to their default against Victory and the crushing 6 - 0 loss to Emsworth C. Victory also had a  6 - 0 win against Fareham B, which improved their match points total.

The other noteworthy point of Division Three was the number of strong players in the divisions, I've covered this in the team analysis, but both Gosport C and Emsworth C included a number of A team players in their C team, but there seemed to be good reasons for this ......?

Gosport had a strange mix of players in the C team, with two regular A team members playing 9 games between them. This meant there was a bit of a miss-match in some of their games, where they out-graded their opponents by over 60 points. This was not always the case and although they both scored a high percentage, they would not have improved their grades from this excursion. The reason for them playing in the C team, was more down to the lack of players, than a desire to win the league, as Gosport C struggled to get a full team out, on a few occasions.

As mentioned, both John Jones and Roger Marsh did not improve their grades by playing in Division Three, but they did score 80% or better, which obviously had the biggest influence in Gosport C's performance in the season. Roger had good wins against two players around the 140 mark and was only held to a draw by Neil Harrison in a game that went the distance. Andy Mills won both his games, which was probably the next best performance by a Gosport player.

Victory only finished one point behind Gosport C and were unlucky not to gain the promotion spot, They won the one game by default against Gosport C and beat them 5 - 1 in one of the other games. They were not so productive against Emsworth C though and lost two of the three games.

What would have helped Victory was the availability of some of the players who performed well, but did not play in that many matches. P.Flack, M.Baxter and R.R.Carter played 7 games between them and won them all! If these players had played more games, this may have made the difference in winning the league.

Performance wise, these players had the best results, although P.Sibley only lost the one game, in his plus +3 performance,

As Victory finishing one point behind Gosport C, Emsworth C only finished one point behind Victory. They defeated all the other teams in the division, but they also lost to them as well.

Their best result came when the beat Gosport C 6 - 0 despite Gosport C fielding John Jones on board one. This was a bolstered Emsworth team, as they had previously lost to a very strong Gosport team and were looking to hold their own in the return match, which they more than managed to do.

There were a few good performances in the Emsworth team, with D.Shotton & R.H.Storr-Best having the best ones for players playing more than four games. Neil Harrison and Mike Krawczuk also had a good season, with Mike winning both his games and Neil's being undefeated despite playing the likes of Roger Marsh.

Although finishing bottom of Division 3, Fareham B managed two wins and two draws from their nine games. This was no mean feat, as they were by far the lowest graded team in the division. These results were also against full teams, with no defaults by the opposition.

D.Clarkson, S.Eva, J.Craig and B.Stoppard were the pick of the bunch performance wise.
