County Teams
In another hugely successful season the county under 125 team won through to the National Finals, where they narrowly lost out to Cambridgeshire 7 – 9. Individual wins in the final were obtained by
· Oliver Coddington
· Bob Cleave
· Gary Myatt
· John Shaddick
· Oliver Payne
The open team did not fare so well, as it finished bottom in the West of England competition. On a brighter note it does seem that there were less problems with board defaults, especially in the 2nd half of the season.
In the Chiltern League, Hants Adults finished 3rd, behind Oxfordshire and Berks Adults. The juniors finished a credible 4th, beating the Adults in their individual match 11 to 9. The Hampshire team dominated the Chiltern League U125 tournament, winning all three of their matches.
As far as I know the captains for the Hampshire team will remain the same for this season, with Dominic Tunks and Ken Retallack continuing to run the Open and U125 teams respectively in both competitions.
1999 – 2000 Leagues
In a close finish Southampton A won Division One of the Southampton Chess League, narrowly edging out Eastleigh Unity A. Champions from two seasons ago Andover A were relegated.

Web Site
In a new initiative, a Hampshire Chess Association Web site has been set up, which I am running. The idea behind the Web Site is to make information more readily available to Hampshire Chess Players.
I will therefore publish any suitable material supplied relating to Hampshire Chess. Some of the information already detailed includes:
· Portsmouth match and individual results from the 1999/2000.
· Southampton match and individual results from the 1998/1999 season.
· Details on this year’s Hampshire Individual Championship, including a downloadable entry form.
· Previous Hampshire Newsletters.
I am hoping to include all results from the County Matches in 2000/2001, as well as the results from the Portsmouth and Southampton leagues. This is dependent on information being sent by Hampshire players, so if you have played in a match and have access to e-mail, please send the match results to me and I will publish.
The Web Site can be found at
WWW.HampshireChess.co.uk
so please have a look and send in your contributions (as this is the on-line version of the newsletter, you have obviously found it!
Correspondence Team
Peter Marshall has stepped down as Captain of the Correspondence team and Fraser McLeod has taken over. In Peter’s last season the team finished a very credible ninth in Division One of the County Correspondence League. Sussex won the league, with Essex finishing second. Individual wins for Hampshire were obtained by:
Corkett A.R Corfield G
Brameld A.F Wheeler J.F
J.Wilkinson McLeod F
Carpenter A.N Barber P
Kinsler D Thompson D
Hampshire Championship
The Hampshire Individual Championships is being held from Friday 10th November to Sunday 12th November at Eastleigh College, Chestnut Avenue, Eastleigh. This is a new venue and it is hoped that the improved conditions will mean more entries.
This year the tournament is to be split into two sections, an Open and an Under 125. Both sections have grading prizes and in total £500 is up for grabs, as well as trophies. Entry fees are £16 in the Open and £13 in the U125. Entry forms have been sent to all clubs that are affiliated to the Hampshire Chess Association, so ask your Club Secretary for a copy, if you haven’t seen one around.
Don’t forget that full details are available on the Web Site, including a downloadable entry form!
Games
The recent County Correspondence season saw some excellent wins by Hampshire players. This win was obtained by new Match Captain Fraser McLeod on board 10. Apologies for publishing another one of Fraser’s games, but I have lost Dave Kinsler’s game that he supplied, due to a move at home. Also, someone kindly e-mailed me with a forced win in Fraser’s game from the last newsletter. But, again I have changed PC’s recently and cannot find the details!

Hampshire Quick play
The Hampshire Team Quick play was held on the 16th April at the Eastleigh Unity Club. The team event was won by Cosham and the individual trophy went to HCA Secretary, John Wheeler who scored 6 out of 6. Equal second on 4 points were Roger Marsh, Ian Henderson and your correspondent (I do manage to play some games now and again). As well as playing, Roger Marsh abely ran the tournament and it is hoped to hold the tournament again next year.
Special Award
At the recent Hampshire Chess AGM, a special award was made to Peter Marshall (right) and Len Walters (centre) for their outstanding contribution to Hampshire Chess. Outgoing President Liam O’Sullivan (left) presented the award. See picture in main article.
