21 Jul 10 Some corrections have been made to the Southampton Chess Club Champions page (introduced during the recent changes) in respect of the years 1989-1993. Some issues remain re: table presentations, and should be improved shortly.
18 Jul 10

Southampton Chess Club:

Some changes have been made to the pages for Southampton Chess Club including entries in the "Club Champions" page for the last two seasons, and corrected location details (including a fix for a broken link).

16 Jul 10

The downloadable list of games (in .PGN format) for the Hampshire Open section of the Hampshire Congress has been updated, adding all games for the last two years, so that all games from 2000 to 2009 are available. Thanks to Arthur Brameld for making these games available.

The games are available from the bottom of the Hampshire Congress page.

15 Jul 10 The current state of the Portsmouth & District Rapidplay League is now available as an Adobe Acrobat File. The Results, as of yesterday, were incomplete. If no more results are received, I understand from John Wheeler, that University will be the winners.
12 Jul 10 The match result is now available for our Hants B team's victory in which they won the ECF Under 140 County Championship. Notts clearly outgraded Hants, so we did well to score 8 draws and 4 wins. And our wins were on higher boards than theirs which gave us the title on tie-break.
11 Jul 10 John Philpott, ECF Controller for the County Correspondence Chess Championships, has started a Blog, giving information about the competition, over and above the statistics themselves.
10 Jul 10 Hampshire are the new Under-140 County Champions. We beat Notts 8-8 on tie-break. Congratulations to Ashraf and his team. Full details to follow.
08 Jul 10 Match details of our under-140 team's victory against Suffolk in the ECF Under 140 County championship are now available on the County Open Results page
05 Jul 10
Hants Under-140 team beat Suffolk in the Semi-Finals - details to follow shortly.
We now travel to Leicester on 10th July to play Nottingham in the Final. Why Leicester? Because all the county finals are taking place at the same time in the same place.
Good luck to Ashraf and his team!
05 Jul 10

Ward Higgs County Correspondence Chess:

Congratulations to Stephen LeFevre on his win on board N7 against James Chadwick of Northumberland!

Please see the Hampshire Correspondence team page for further details.

04 Jul 10

I regret that Moses Kawuma has kindly contributed what he claims is his last competitive game.

I've entered it in the "Other Games" page, and I'm sure that I'll be joined by many others in asking him to reconsider his decision at a later date!

03 Jul 10

Some games that were entered early this year before the website was re-integrated have been moved:

  • A correspondence game between Barry Hampton and Fraser McLeod has been moved to the "Other Games" section.
  • Michael Yeo's win against A.Kondenko in the Moscow Open, and David Fowler's victory in a simul against Viktor Korchnoi have been moved to the "Famous Games" section.
03 Jul 10

Southampton League:

The table of Southampton League Champions (showing the winning teams for each division) has been completed in respect of the last three seasons, bringing it up-to-date.

02 Jul 10

Ward Higgs County Correspondence Chess:

25 Jun 10

Portsmouth & District League:

The Portsmouth Individual Champions page has been brought up-to-date for all years from 2004-5 to the present, and from this year additional columns have been added for the Wilf Pratten and Reg Clark Cup Winners

25 Jun 10

Portsmouth & District League:

The following revised documents are being mailed to clubs:

The earlier version (issued on this website on 23rd June, and which had an error in the calculation) has been withdrawn.

24 Jun 10 Paul Hurn was elected as Vice-President of the Hampshire Chess Association at the recent AGM, and so has been added to the HCA Officers page.

29 May 10

Southampton League:

The following adjudication decisions have been made in Division 2, both affecting adjourned games in the two matches between Passed Pawn B and Winchester A:

In Passed Pawn B's home match, the game between Wilkinson and Esmat has been adjudicated as a draw, giving the match result also as a draw:

Passed Pawn B 2.5 - 2.5 Winchester A

In Winchester A's home match:

K.Esmat 0 - 1 M.Buckley

And in the game White - Dean, the league committee decided to award black his claim of a draw in the absence of any claim for a win from white.

So the match result is:

Winchester A 2 - 3 Passed Pawn B.

These results mean that Southampton B are promoted.

28 May 10

Thursday’s AGM of the Southampton Chess League sees 10 proposals voted on.  These are summarised as

1) Making it compulsory for teams who wish to play a player above one 10 or more points higher graded than themselves to have to notify the league in advance.

2
) To require grades to be written on match cards

3) To ensure teams exchange match cards in an accepted fashion

4) To use
a single time control for the first session of play

5) To introduce more stringent rules so as to prevent as far as possible postponed fi
xtures creating a backlog.

6) To make s
ealed moves form part of the analysis in adjudications

7) To introduce new rules relating to the time limit for completion of adjourned games

8) To make it clear as to the time when a sealed move can be completed

9) A plan to reduce the rules for eligibility in the lower divisions

10) To void games where both teams are at fault for the non-completio
n of it

All of these are expected to lead to an interesting exchange at the AGM.  A full copy of the agenda and the proposals have been sent to clubs.  The AGM will be held at Eastleigh Railway Institute on Thursday commencing at 7.30 p.m.
