Southampton Chess Club:

Some changes have been made to the pages for Southampton Chess Club including entries in the "Club Champions" page for the last two seasons, and corrected location details (including a fix for a broken link).

The downloadable list of games (in .PGN format) for the Hampshire Open section of the Hampshire Congress has been updated, adding all games for the last two years, so that all games from 2000 to 2009 are available. Thanks to Arthur Brameld for making these games available.

The games are available from the bottom of the Hampshire Congress page.

Ward Higgs County Correspondence Chess:

I regret that Moses Kawuma has kindly contributed what he claims is his last competitive game.

I've entered it in the "Other Games" page, and I'm sure that I'll be joined by many others in asking him to reconsider his decision at a later date!

Some games that were entered early this year before the website was re-integrated have been moved:

• A correspondence game between Barry Hampton and Fraser McLeod has been moved to the "Other Games" section.
• Michael Yeo's win against A.Kondenko in the Moscow Open, and David Fowler's victory in a simul against Viktor Korchnoi have been moved to the "Famous Games" section.

Southampton League:

The table of Southampton League Champions (showing the winning teams for each division) has been completed in respect of the last three seasons, bringing it up-to-date.

County Matches:

  Hampshire’s team for players graded under 140 have reached the semi finals of the county championship with an 8.5-7.5 win against Kent, with their winners being Barry Kocan, Ewart Smith, Bob Cleave, John Shaddick and Philip Gething. 

They will be playing against either Suffolk or Staffordshire in the semi Finals.

Cosham lost to Snodland in the semi final of the ECF National Club Intermediate Championship on Sunday 30th May.

Southampton League:

In Passed Pawn B's home match, the game between Wilkinson and Esmat has been adjudicated as a draw, giving the match result also as a draw:

Passed Pawn B 2.5 - 2.5 Winchester A

In Winchester A's home match:

K.Esmat 0 - 1 M.Buckley

And in the game White - Dean, the league committee decided to award black his claim of a draw in the absence of any claim for a win from white.

So the match result is:

Winchester A 2 - 3 Passed Pawn B.

These results mean that Southampton B are promoted.

Thursday’s AGM of the Southampton Chess League sees 10 proposals voted on.  These are summarised as

1) Making it compulsory for teams who wish to play a player above one 10 or more points higher graded than themselves to have to notify the league in advance. 

2) To require grades to be written on match cards. 

3) To ensure teams exchange match cards in an accepted fashion

4) To use a single time control for the first session of play

5) To introduce more stringent rules so as to prevent as far as possible postponed fixtures creating a backlog.

6) To make sealed moves form part of the analysis in adjudications

7) To introduce new rules relating to the time limit for completion of adjourned games

8) To make it clear as to the time when a sealed move can be completed

9) A plan to reduce the rules for eligibility in the lower divisions

10) To void games where both teams are at fault for the non-completion of it

All of these are expected to lead to an interesting exchange at the AGM.  A full copy of the agenda and the proposals have been sent to clubs.  The AGM will be held at Eastleigh Railway Institute on Thursday commencing at 7.30 p.m.

The battle for the division 2 championship will be decided when the two matches between Winchester A and Passed Pawn B have been resolved.  The results of these games will decide whether Winchester A or Southampton B have won the title.  Other divisional titles have respectively won by division 1 Southampton A, division 3 Winchester College A, division 4 Ringwood and division 5 Southampton D.

Southampton League Clubnight Changes:

Andover's club night is having to change to Wednesday with immediate effect.

Salisbury's night, which did show as Thursday on the website, is now in fact a Tuesday.

Chiltern League:

All matches this year for the B Team have now been entered.

Assuming that these results are agreed, this confirms that Hampshire won Div 2.

Hampshire also won Div 1 and came 2nd in Div 3 so a good season overall.

The results listed on the website for division 1 will shortly be reviewed and brought up to date.

The Hants B Team (under 150 grade) had a decisive victory, in an away match against Berkshire B, winning 14 - 2.

The annual general meeting of the Southampton Chess League will be held at Eastleigh Railway Institute on Thursday 3rd June, start 7.30 p.m.

Ringwood B have won the division 4 championship in a very closely contested division in which they only had a better game points average than one other team in their division.

The Hampshire first team drew 3 of their 4 county championship games, but the other one against Cornwall was a double default and they ended up fourth in their group of five teams. Hampshire teams have quarter final dates playing Middlesex in the Minor, and Kent in the under 140 grading section, with both matches scheduled for 22nd May.
