Good News! John Davis from Southampton Chess Club has agreed to update the key parts of the web-site for the remainder of the season. The easiest way to do this is to replicate the site on his own web.

Hopefully I have updated the header to link these parts to his web-site.

02 Jan 10

You will have noticed the lack of updates on the web-site in the last month. Unfortunately due to a lot of other commitments I have been unable to keep the site updated as much as previous years.

Therefore rather than promise that this will be completed in the near future, I think I have to say that this is the end of the website under my hands. As I am still receiving the regular results from John, Malcolm, Fraser and Domnic (and others) I am going to create one page with all these results, so that these can be viewed - This should be created in the next couple of days.

It is my understanding that the website will continue, as someone else has stepped forward to take on this role. This is likely to be for next season though, but I will update the website when this has been confirmed.

I would like to take this opportunity to say that I have really enjoyed running the website and am proud that is has been used by so many of Hampshire players in the last 8 or 9 years (I am not sure how long it has been). I would like to thank all the people who have supplied results, games, articles and puzzles for the website.

A special thank you needs to be said to:

John Wheeler (Portsmouth results and games)

Malcolm Clarke (Southampton results)

Fraser McLeod (County results, League results, games, spotting my errors)

Dominic Tunks (Hampshire results, games with great analysis)

Chris Priest (Games and results)

John Jones (Archive games from Portsmouth League and Wilf Pratten games)

Malcolm Body (Puzzles (and I still have some I have not posted - sorry))

Arthur Brameld (Hampshire Congress Games)

Finally a Happy New Year to everyone - and on a personal note I hope it is a lot better than 2009!

Mike Yeo (Wessex) regained the Hampshire County Championship after a gap of 7 years. He was a point clear of the field after 4 rounds, but finally had to share first place with former champions Steven Kawuma (Southampton) and Dominic Tunks (Emsworth), all scoring 4.5 pts. Mike had the better tie-break score.

Richard McMaster (Portsmouth) won the grading prize with 4 pts, and in the process damaged the chances of several serious contenders for the county title.

Both of the lower sections were deservedly won by Southampton University students this year. The new Under-150 section was won by Sal Awangku with a round to spare - he finished with 5.5 pts.

And the new Under-125 champion is Alex Beaney, who scored 5 pts and had a better tie-break than Ken Sullivan (Portsmouth).

Here are the full results:

Open. 1=. Steven Kawuma, Dominic Tunks and Mike Yeo (4.5 pts). Mike Yeo is county champion on tie-break.

Under-170 Grading Prize: Richard McMaster (4 pts)

Under-150 1. K. Awangku (5.5 pts) 2. Peter Manning (4 pts) 3=. Tim Allen, Phil Foley and Ian Matthew (3.5 pts) The 3rd prize winners also shared the Under-140 grading prize.

Under-125

Games: Chris Priest's has annotated his game against Norfolk from the Quarter Final of the County Championship last year.

Chris Priest has supplied the following with regards to Eastleigh Railway Chess Club. This is an excerpt from his e-mail to the Southampton League Secretaries.

Dear Southampton League Secretaries and Division 2 Captains,

It is with great regret that I have to announce that the Eastleigh Railway Chess Club will withdraw its B team from the Robertson Cup and Division 2 of the Southampton League for the 2009/2010 season.

This decision was practically forced on us by the non-availability of 3 A team players (on top of the 3 B team players we lost last year) leaving us with not enough players to maintain 4 teams in the Southampton League in the coming season. All our 3 remaining teams will suffer to a greater or lesser extent because of this. It is most unfortunate that we did not find out about the non-availability until a week after the fixture list had been distributed.

By withdrawing before the season starts we hope to leave a level playing field for the other Division 2 teams to fight a fair battle for promotion and relegation. We wish we could have joined in. We expect our other 3 teams will now be able to meet their match commitments in the other divisions (1, 4 and 5).

02 July 09

At the Southampton Chess League AGM Gillian Moore (Southampton) was elected chairman, with Jonathan Hunt (Winchester College) vice chairman.  The role of secretary was split in two with Malcolm Clarke (Eastleigh Rail) fixtures and results secretary, and Fraser McLeod (Southampton) performing the other secretarial duties.

It was agreed that a team fielding an ineligible player would lose both the game of individual player, and the match.   Both captains now have to send in results cards, and other amendments to the rules were made in a well attended annual general meeting.

The draw for the 1st round of the Robertson Cup is:

Eastleigh Rail B v Ordnance Survey A

Southampton B v Passed Pawn B

Winchester A v Ringwood

University A v Passed Pawn A

University B v Andover

Winchester B v Salisbury A

Southampton A v Winchester College A

Eastleigh Rail A v Ordnance Survey B

Eastleigh Rail B or Ordnance Survey A v Southampton B or Passed Pawn B

Southampton A or Winchester College A v Eastleigh Rail A or Ordnance Survey B

John Patience: Les Allen of Southampton Chess Club has supplied the following with regards to  John Patience:

" John, and his younger brother Mark, both played chess as juniors. Mark, played for Foundry Lane school, and I remember playing against Mark in a closely run game. He had ability, but as far as I am aware never pursued chess as actively as John. In the early 1960's, Regents Park School had a very strong team, consisting of John (board1), Phill Mitchell, Meeghan, Nias, and myself on board 5. I was 2 years younger than my compatriots. We had many a battle with Itchen and St.Mary's college, but usually prevailed. Even at this stage, one could tell John was a cut above the rest on ability. He was a very sound, controlled , positional player."

"I remember with much happiness, the times we spent as competitors at the S.C.C.U. chess championships held at Butlins, Bognor Regis. Once we had finished our games and provided there were no adjournments, Butlins was there for us to enjoy! What great fun we had! John enjoyed watching the antics of the more juvenile of us. On a more serious note, John performed admirably and went on to compete in the British championships."

"In recent years, we have been on the same and opposite teams, but I shall always remember John as a good friend and a true gentleman".
