The match is now a 1-3 win for Passed Pawn A, but the game between Fraser McLeod and Humphrey Lwambula still survives after one adjournment session!

Hampshire Congress 2011 Games

Thanks once again to Arthur Brameld for entering and making available all games in the Open and Major sections of the recent Hampshire Congress.

These matches were played at Laverstock (near Salisbury) yesterday.

Congratulations to both teams, the results being:

On board 1 of the A team match, Michael Yeo had an excellent victory against International Master Jack Rudd (who incidentally beat GM Simon Williams last month).

Results for Divisions 1-5 are now on new division pages, and are up-to-date with all results received (excepting Div 3 University C v Ordnance Survey A where there is a query concerning the result figures).

The results are now database-driven, with automatically generated results and cross-tables. There is a new facility on the division pages whereby, by clicking on a team name in the cross-table, just results involving that team will be displayed. To get back to viewing all teams for the division, click on the link on the word "Teams" in the top row of the cross-table.

Cup Results (Robertson Cup/Plate and Div 4/5 cup) are still in temporary listings on their respective pages at this moment, but will be reformatted soon, as will Portsmouth League results.

Southampton League - New Ringwood Team in Division 5

Agreement has been reached between Malcolm Clarke (Results Secretary) and the Division 5 clubs for approriate changes to the fixture list to allow a new Ringwood team to join the division.

This means that each team will have one home and one away match against each of its opponents, rather than 3 matches.

Details of the fixture changes will be made available on the website shortly, but I understand that the clubs are aware of the necessary changes.

ECF Funding Proposals

At its AGM on Saturday, the ECF voted in favour of a membership-only approach to funding its activities.

This means that from September 2012, players in all graded events will be expected to be individual members of the English Chess Federation.

More details are expected later.

Southampton Individual Tournament

Entries are invited for the Southampton Individual chess tournament by Wednesday 19 October. This is open to any member of a club affiliated to the Southampton League. The format is usually an all-play-all tournament, involving around 6 to 8 games, depending on entries, played at each other's clubs or homes.

WECU County Match - Rescheduling of Gloucestershire v Hampshire Fixture

This match, originally scheduled for Saturday December 3rd, has now been rescheduled for Sunday December 4th.

John Wheeler reports that there wasno suitable venue available on the original date, so we are going for Sun 4th Dec. The venue is Urchfont, and it's a 1pm start, as we have to vacate the room by 5.30 pm.

Spectrum Chess 1st Fareham Congress Report

This tournament, held in the Bugle Hotel, Titchfield, was successfully concluded yesterday, involving approximately 55 players. Thanks are due to Norman Went and Kevin Thurlow for administering the event, and to Marcus Butler of the Bugle Hotel (also a keen chess player) for his hospitality for the participants.

2010-11 League Results for Portsmouth and Southampton Leagues

The division pages are now obtained from a database, with computer-generated tables (which seem to agree with the old tables!).

The presentation is almost identical to that of the old pages, except:

  • Player names have been rationalised - where there were sometimes several variants of a players name, now there is one. These changes have been done with some care, but if there are any errors reported, they will be corrected.
  • In the cross-table, each team name now has a hyper-link. If you click on a team name, then the division page will show just the matches in which that team played. To get back to seeing all matches for the division, click on the link on the work "Teams" at the top of the cross-table.

The old division pages are still available, but not from the menu system:

Unfortunately neither of Hampshire's adjudication claims were upheld, resulting in only a draw for John Wilkinson and a loss for Micky Blake.

The final position for the 2010-2011 season (see results page for further details) is that

Hampshire scored 10 - their opponents scored 12

At the club AGM last night, David Murchie retired from the post of Secretary, in which he has served well since 2005.

The new Southampton Club Secretary is Robin Williams.

Fraser McLeod has issued revised new League rules (dated July 2011) which are available on the Southampton League Home Page and come into effect for the new season.

An obituary for Iain Stenhouse is now available.

ECF Funding Proposals

John Wheeler reports:

The ECF have just published their proposals for new funding arrangements. (PDF)

The loss of the government grant means that the ECF has a shortfall of £60,000 per year to make up. Considerable savings have already been made in the office costs, but further measures are needed

.The new proposals can be found on the ECF website

They will be considered at the ECF AGM on 15th October, and if agreed, will take effect from 1st September 2012.

We are all likely to be affected by these proposals.

FIDE News

It appears that the President of FIDE, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, may be a key player in the search for Colonel Gaddaffi, according to today's BBC news article.

"....But he has not been seen in public since May, and one of his last TV appearances was in mid-June when Gadaffi was pictured playing chess with the president of the World Chess Federation, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov. "

On Tuesday, Mr Ilyumzhinov said he had spoken personally to Col Gaddafi and his son, Saif al-Islam, by telephone.

"[Saif al-Islam] gave the phone to his father, who said that he was in Tripoli, he was alive and healthy and was prepared to fight to the end," Mr Ilyumzhinov told the Reuters news agency.

Ward Higgs County Correspondence Chess

Two losses have been reported for Hampshire:

On board E7 David Kinsler lost against Robert Forsythe of Northumberland

On board N5 Andrew D Smith lost against Neil Limbert of Yorkshire

So the current official position is that Hants trail thier opponents by 9.5 to 10.5 with 2 games outstanding.

But on board N4, John Wilkinson is claiming a win against Paul Griseri of Kent - if confirmed, this would be the equaliser for Hampshire.

Just one match result would then be outstanding for the season's competition - Board E1 between Michael Blake and M.J.Donnelly of Warwickshire.
