Chiltern League

Firstly, results for our A team's match away to Buckinghamshire on 28th January.

We were outgraded by an average of 12.4 points on each board, and despite valiant resistance, lost by 15-5.

Winners for Hampshire were Paul Cooper, Timothy Chapman and John Watts.

But last Saturday, our B team were once again triumphant (having won every match this season!), winning by 6.5 - 9.5 away to Berkshire. Winners for Hampshire were Paul Johnson, John Watts, Peter Dallas, Jamie Chilton, Ewart Smith, John Wiseman, Philip Gething and team captain Ashraf Syed.

Southampton League Grading

In answer to queries re: the new January grading list, Fraser McLeod gives the following advice:

- For players who had a grade in the start-of-season ECF listing - that's the grade that should be used on scorecards, and to determine playing order (see the rules for further details)

- however, if it is felt that a player's grade has changed significantly, the rules provide for a "League Grade" to be requested, and then used for the rest of the season. An example might be where a player's grade has changed by approximately 20 points in the January list.

- In the case of players who were previously ungraded, but now have a grade in the January list, it would seem sensible to use the new grade on scorecards henceforth.

Roger Marsh has highlighted an error in the ECF listings that affects the Southampton League, but not the Portsmouth and District League. In the listing of games played for a player, the board numbers are not correct. It would seem that this may be because board numbers were not supplied to the ECF for Southampton League, and the process of loading this data has caused false assumptions re" the board numbers of games.

New Half Year Grades are Out!

Please see our Grades Page for local club information (and a link to the ECF online grading page).

If you click on the link against any player's grade code, you can now (from that detail page) click on another link to see all the games that went up to make that grade - by year.

N.B. For Southampton League, the league rules require grades to be written on scorecards.

They say :

The most recent ECF grading list published before the start of the season (usually in July or August) will be the main indication of playing strength to be used throughout the season (for consistency reasons); mid-season grading lists will be ignored by the league and should not be used by team captains in determining board order.

Clarification is being sought for the case of a previously ungraded player who has now received a grade for the first time.

Match Results Against Devon

On Saturday our A and B teams travelled to Wincanton to engage Devon in battle. (16 boards for the A team, 12 for the B team).

Overall match results for both teams were even.

Our A team beat Devon by 10-6.

Winners for Hants A were Michael Yeo, Dominic Tunks, Bill McDougall, Jasper Tambini, Tom Anderson, David Fowler and Chris Priest.

But our B team was beaten by Devon by 8-4. Our winners were David Culliford and Michael Pope.

Craig Hanley at Gibraltar Open

Craig Hanley, the International Master who won the Hampshire Open in November (FIDE rated 2421), has got off to an excellent start in the Gibraltar Festival by beating the 2703 rated Israeli Grandmaster Emil Sutovsky.

In round 2 he'll be playing another Grandmaster - the world famous woman player Humpy Koneru from India (rated 2589) who is no. 3 in the womens world ratings.

Bournemouth Grand Chess Congress - 20-22 April 2012

This tournament is being organised by Martin Simons (who is a member of Eastleigh Rail Chess Club).

He says:

Could I please ask if you would kindly advertise the above ambitious congress on the Hampshire Chess Association Chess website.

We are trying to attract strong players, including Grandmasters and we hope that by funding a fantastic 1st prize in the Open section this might entice them.

In particular, I believe we are the 1st weekend congress in many years to offer a £1,000 guaranteed 1st prize in the Open.

We are also funding good guaranteed prizes in the Challengers (£300) and Minor (£200) sections.

Congratulations to the Hampshire U150 team , who beat Buckinghamshire 9.5 - 6.5 at the weekend.
