About the Club

Southampton Chess Club meets on Tuesday evenings, 7.00-10.00 p.m., September to May inclusive (except between Christmas and New Year), at the Oasis Academy, Fairisle Road, Lordshill, Southampton SO16 8BY, U.K.

N.B. The Oasis Academy was formerly known as "Oaklands School" and some signposts still use this name.

If you're coming for the first time, please arrive as soon after 7 p.m. as possible - we'll then have plenty of time to meet you prior to when games start (usually around 7.25). Our A.G.M. is usually held on the first Tuesday of September.

We currently have about 35 members encompassing a wide range of playing strengths. Juniors are very welcome. All Club members have full opportunity to play in various events:
(1) Club championship. Run every Tuesday (except on dates of quickplay events), although you're not obliged to play each week. A good opportunity to get competitive games in as often as you want. Average score of last eight games determines final position. We also have a Knockout tournament that runs throughout the season. All games E.C.F. graded.
(2) Southampton league. We currently have five teams playing in the Southampton league (for details see the Hampshire Chess Association website). Everyone who wishes to represent the Club in a team will be invited to do so.
(3) National Club competitions.
(4) Quickplay events. We have three one-evening quickplay tournaments: two use the dreaded ten-second buzzer, and the other is a five minutes for all the moves affair. Real fun events.

Club members regularly participate in weekend tournaments, including the Hampshire Championship (run by the Hampshire Chess Association), and congresses at Basingstoke, Portsmouth, Weymouth, Exeter and Frome. Come along and join in!

For those who enjoy a drop of refreshment after a dual over the board, we meet in the pub after 10 p.m. on Tuesday evenings, to share in all those brilliancies and blunders (hopefully more of the former!).

If you're at all unsure about whether to come, or would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact David Murchie (murchie@btinternet.com) or any Club committee member.
