Hampshire Congress 2004 Round One

Contents Round 2

The Hampshire Congress incorporating the Hampshire Individual Championship was held at Eastleigh College the weekend of 30th October 2004. After a steady increase of players in the last few years, it was disappointing to see the numbers in the Open down from 32 to 20, although there was an increase from 20 to 26 in the Under 125 tournament.

The format of the report this year, is to have one game highlighted from the round, which you can play through on-line. All the games from the round are also available to go through on-line on a separate page (see below). In addition you can download all the games from the Hampshire Congress 2004 Contents page. I hope you enjoy the report and any feedback is welcome. If you were a participant in the tournament I would welcome your own analysis to the games, which I will be very pleased to publish. This is also true for the under 125 tournament, as I do not have any of these games.

Tony Corkett was back to defend the title he won last year and being the highest graded player by 16 points made him the favourite. Other previous Hampshire Individual Champions in the field were Michael Yeo and Dominic Tunks.

The first round was the normal slaughter as the higher graded players met the lower graded players.

For myself, it was a case of deja vu, as I had white against John Wheeler, which was exactly the same pairing as last year. Unfortunately, for me the trend continued, with John winning the game fairly easily.

Update 1st Jan 2005

With regards to the Joe Coburn - Michael Yeo game I had entered this incorrectly. Previously it looked as if Joe could have won a pawn as I had the 8th move as Qa4 when it was actually a4. Therefore the final position was one where Joe had a slight advantage, but not one where he could have won a pawn, nevertheless an excellent result for Joe.

In the final position Michael Yeo indicates that 22....Nxb4 23 Nd4 could be played where White has a slight advantage.
