On board two last year's champion Michael Yeo was playing three time champion Dominic Tunks. Michael has kindly annotated this game in full, this is especially welcome as he the game did not go well for him! Initially White had a very good position, which was probably winning, but then Michael played one bad move, which allowed Dominic to play a nice combination, netting White's Queen. In the diagramed position right, Mike gives the following comments ... 23.Bf4?? [I had originally intended 23.Bf6! but after 23...Nf3+ 24.Kf1 I spotted 24...Nd2+ Even so, 25.Ke1 Nxb1 26.Qxg4 Nxa3 27.Nf4 is a lot better for White as Nxe6 is a threat; Even after 23.Bf6 Nf3+ it would also have been possible to play 24.Kh1 since after 24...Qg8 25.Bg5 (25.gxf3? e3 is curtains) 25...Rxg5 26.Nxg5 Qxg5 ( 26...Nxg5 27.Qg4 is good for White) 27.Qxg5 Nxg5 28.h4 amusingly traps the knight!] So why not improve on this by covering the d2 square while attacking the knight? 23...Nf3+ 24.Kf1 Rh4 and Black won 25.Qxh4 Nxh4 26.Rb3 Qg7 27.Rg3 Ng6 28.Rd1 e5 29.Be3 f5 30.f4 exf3 31.gxf3 f4 32.Bxf4 exf4 33.Nxf4 Qf7 34.Ne6 Qxe6 0–1
The full game, with Michael's annotation is well worth playing through - it makes a change from my comments as well! Yeo v Tunks |
