1988 - 1989  County Matches Analysis

 

A funny old season with the A team only losing the one match in the West of England, but the B team only winning the one match. There doesn't seem to be a reason for this, as Hampshire B averaged slightly more than their opponents, although in the Cornwall match we did default 5 boards, which was the reason for that defeat.

 

The A team was more solid, with close wins against Wiltshire and Gloucester.  The Gloucester match was a particular good win, as Hampshire gave up an average of 15 points on each board, but managed to win 9 - 7. So in the Harold Meek trophy Hampshire only lost to a strong Devon side and finished second, behind the same team.  This ensured that Hampshire qualified for the Quarter Finals of the BCF County stages, but lost to Yorkshire, despite having a slightly stronger team.

 

In the Player Performance table, I've highlighted in Red the players that performed over 200, of which there were 5. The best performance by a Hampshire player was by Bill Purkiss, who won all three of his games, performing to approx. 222 strength. Other strong performances were achieved by P.J.Hebblewaithe, S.LeFevre, J.Monk, Stuart Dean, Peter Marshall, Mike Yeo, B.P.Sweeney, Kevin Byard and Richard Perrin.
