1982 - 1983  County Matches Analysis

 

Hampshire A only lost the one game, to a strong Glocestershire side and drew against Somerset. The surprising result though was the 11 - 5 win against Devon A, where there was little to choose grading wise between the sides. The B team were slightly less successful, but on average their opposition was slightly stronger, whereas the A team averaged 10 points higher than their opponents.

 

Performance wise, there was a number of players performing over 200 (8 in total, highlighted in red), but P.J.Stevenson, had the best performance with 4 wins from his 4 games. Other players who had a good season included W.H.Silber, Len Walters, Peter Miller, K.R.Walker, S.W.Tan, Gerald Bennett and C.Moorman. 

 

Hampshire had the benefit of two very strong players this season, with Peter Wells (215) playing four games and Gerald Bennett (207) playing twice (winning both). As you will know, Peter has gone on to become a Grandmaster. Arthur Brameld was the third Hampshire player graded 200 or over this season.
