1980 - 1981  County Matches Analysis

 

Hampshire A only lost the one match, to Devon A, winning the other four matches. This included beating a Gloucester side averaging 182, five points higher than Hampshire. This was another excellent season, as on the whole the other teams averaged only 3 points less than Hampshire.

 

Although the B team averaged the same as the other counties, they were outgraded heavily in the three defeats and outgraded their opponents in the two wins. Therefore they did as expected in the Wayling Cup competition. 

 

Hampshire only had one played graded over 200 this season and G.Bennett (213) only played the one game. Three players performed over 200 and these are highlighted in red.

 

The players who had an exceptional season were S.D.Bell, P.D.Miller, A.D.Crossin, M.J.Hampton, Stuart Dean, J.J.Evans, Len Walters and J.Quantrell. Stephen Bell is the son of David Bell and is currently graded 216 (2002), unfortunately he no longer lives in the area, as otherwise he would come in quite handy at the moment! He has won the Southampton Chess Club championship 3 times (1980 - 1982 inclusive). See Southampton Chess Club web site..

 

One final note, you will notice that G.L.Pritchard did not have the best of seasons with one win, one draw and two losses. His draw though was against a very young Michael Adams, so not too bad a season when you draw against a future British Champion and world number four - get them when their young!
