Iain Stenhouse
Iain, who died at the end of July 2011, was a prominent local chess player, of many talents and accomplishments.
He was dedicated to chess. A pretty good player. A very modest man. He did a lot to encourage and teach youngsters.
He had a rather quiet personality and was very much respected. Always the perfect gentleman, courteous and helpful.
A good loser, and a good winner at chess!
The chess world round these parts has every reason to remember him with gratitude and respect. He loved and served chess and chess players.
He was a member of Southampton Chess club, winning the Club Championship in 1972 and 1979. He was also the Southampton Echo chess columnist for over 20 years, and served as Results Secretary of Southampton League, and County match captain.
He also organised an annual chess tournament at the University of Southampton, which attracted players from all over the South Coast.
He also was a keen mountaineer and traveller - and climbed Mont Blanc, and became involved in a project to bring pure drinking water to rural communities is Sri Lanka, but also contracted serious illness in the Indian sub-continent.
The August 2011 edition of British Chess Magazine also has an obituary of Iain, with an excellent photograph of him, which may be accessed by this link (with permission).
