Hampshire scored a good victory against Gloucestershire last Saturday.  On paper the two teams were very close - overall and on every board.  Remarkably, there were only six draws.  And those included some of the last games to finish - tough battles indeed.  Congratulations to all who played and thanks too to those additional players who were available and gave me the luxury of selecting the team.  I left out a couple of good players to give our bottom boards a game and one of the satisfying things for me about our victory was that we won on those bottom boards, although we were slightly outgraded.

You could say I'm pleased!  In the good old days when Richard Webb led the team and Hampshire was a force to be reckoned with, we would beat Devon regularly.  Since I've been Captain (which is quite a while, now I come to think of it), I don't remember beating Devon at all.  If we have, it wasn't this millennium (and probably not for a long time before that).  Playing Devon had become a depressing experience, for me and the team.

Not anymore!  For once we matched them on paper.  This wasn't because Devon was weaker - it was thanks to a fine turnout from Hampshire.  Thank you all.  I hope you enjoyed the win as much as I did!

In fact, there wasn't any significant grading difference on any board.  It promised to be a tense, close match but, while we dropped a couple of earlyish losses, after that it was all one-way traffic - Hampshire reeled off win after win after win.  Seven in all.  The other seven games were drawn.  Well done all!

Our U150 team had something to live up to - last year, although heavily outgraded, we held Devon to a 6-6 draw.  That was a great result, could we go one better this time?

Well, on paper we still had a grading deficit, most noticeably on the bottom few boards.  But paper counts for little - Jon Young and Matt Ward are both having fantastic seasons for Hampshire (you will remember that it was these two whose wins on the bottom boards against Gloucestershire sealed our victory in that match).

When they won quickly, the Devon Captain started to look worried.  Sadly this was the exact mirror image of the first team's results and after the two early wins the traffic was all the other way.  An equal number of wins and draws secured a 7.5-4.5 victory for Devon.

Thank you alike to players and supporters this year. Personally a difficult one, but as a team we had perhaps our most successful season under my captaincy. Our victories against Devon and Norfolk were I think the highlights for me.

Our season is now over, having lost in the Semi-Final to Leicestershire by one Grandmaster to nil. Ieuan made a valiant effort, but with the black pieces it was a bit much to ask! The rest of us were much more evenly matched - the 147 on board 3 is deceptive... this was a junior player and grades mean nothing! And it turned out to be an extremely close match. We were 7-6 up with boards 2, 7 and 14 to finish. Ganesan seemed to be drawing and, while we had looked lost on both the other boards earlier, our improving positions on both led to all sorts of 'what-if' board counting computations being made.

Ganesan thought he had to win - a sure way to lose! - meanwhile Ian had rescued a half on board 2 so the board counting calculations now favoured us. Eventually we lost on the other two boards and the match slipped away by the smallest of margins. So close!

A great effort - thank you all again.

Regards

Dominic Tunks - Match Captain.
