Hampshire wrapped up a convincing 10-6
victory against Glos when Ieuan Ward, playing his first game for the
County, completed a hard-fought win on top board. Martin Buckley had
opened the scoring some 3½ hours earlier with a 13-move win on board 8.
We had two other first team debutantes - Chris Bellers drew on board 4 and David Hart won on 6. It is also encouraging that the team's average grade (probably) exceeded 150 - the first time we have managed that in a WECU game since March 2006. Other Hampshire winners were Dominic Tunks, Matt Ludbrook, Steve Smith, John Watts, Steve LeFevre and Tim Chapman. There were, in fact, only two draws in this remarkably full-on contest. The other was on board 3, where Fraser McLeod, fought back excellently from a piece-for-a-pawn down. All the games looked interesting. Khaled's in particular caught my eye - Khaled had a vicious attack going and his opponent repeatedly had to find good moves to survive. Thank you to the 16 players for a good match, to those who were in reserve and for the words of encouragement for us from some others. Dominic Tunks - Match Captain |

Congratulations go to, in particular, Hampshire's second team players who held the mighty Devon second team to a 6-all draw - no-one could quite remember the last time Devon's second team had failed to win a match, so that puts this achievement into context. Hampshire winners were Barry Kocan, Julius Mach, Rick Smith and Patrick Butler. The first team also had its best result against Devon for some years - the even distribution of 0s, 0.5s and 1s down the scorecard perhaps showing the closeness of the match more accurately than the final scoreline of 10-6 to Devon. First team winners for Hampshire were Ieuan Ward, Chris J Bellers, Ilya Iyengar and Stuart Dean. Dominic Tunks - Match Captain |

We were due to play two matches against Somerset, over a total of 24 boards. I get the impression that, initially, the Somerset Captain invited only players graded over 100. If he'd had under 100 players playing as well, they would probably have had an excellent game against some of our players with similar grades. Instead, he was left short of players and had to default, not only the entire second team match, but the bottom four of the first team match. When his board 3 player didn't not turn up on the day, Somerset started 5-0 down with no real hope of winning. Over the 11 boards that did play, we were very evenly matched on paper. The total grading difference was only 30 (in our favour) and the biggest difference on any board was 9 grading points. However, after 10 of the 11 had finished, we had scored only six draws and no wins. The last game to finish was between Hampshire David Thompson and Roger Turner, on board 9. W: Kg1 Qg3 Rc1,g7 Nc5 Pa4,b4,e5,f2,g2,h3 B: Kh7 Qe8 Rc8,f5 Bc6 Nc7 Pa6,d5,e6,h5 Black (to play) had to win this to save the match. He is a piece for two pawns up but his king is cornered and his pieces are horribly uncoordinated on the c-file. I would guess that ...d4 is his best shot, trying to free up that logjam of pieces on the c-file. Instead his ...h4 (further weakening his K's position) looked wrong, and after Qg4, Qh5? allowed this very fine finish: Rxc7! Rxc7 Nxe6 Qxg4 hxg4 Rff7 Nxc7 Rxc7 b5.... White recovered the piece and won easily. Hampshire's only win, but a 9-7 overall score in our favour - because we had players graded under 100 in our team where Somerset had empty boards. Thank you all. Dominic Tunks |
