The first surprise for me with this
match was that I was turning players away - my thanks to all. Those of us
that got a game seemed to get good ones - the result of the match might
not have been close, but some of the games looked excellent. The ones I
saw were those around me (mine, of course, Mike's on board 2 and Tom and
Richard sitting behind me). My opponent's play makes my game worth a look
- several have asked so I append it for amusement (although it seems I was
right about that Tunks chap - he didn't cut the mustard at all on board
1). Mike's game was even better, Mike playing with R+NvQ. Two pieces
proved better than one and, but for a time-pressured blunder, our winning
margin would have been even greater. Richard also seemed to have a
material imbalance - 4 minor pieces versus R and two minor pieces. And
Tom's game had asymmetrical pawns and play across the entire board. All
very interesting stuff. From the chat at the end of the match it seemed
like there were several other enjoyable games too. That's why we play,
n'est-ce pas?
But we also seem to be winning now too - so far, we have lost only to Devon and there is a risk that we're going to end up near the top of the league!! (Devon squashed Wiltshire on Saturday and are surely now uncatchable, but second place would be a great achievement.) Thanks and regards Dominic Tunks Match Captain And, for those who like to see a grown man cry.... (any errors in the analysis are mine) |

The resounding 10-6 win was no more than
we deserved - a great result. I haven't had time to look back over the
record to see the last time we beat Wiltshire in Wiltshire, but it must have
been a good few years ago. And it completes a fine double - we beat them
last year in Southampton.
Wiltshire's main strength is their ability to call on 200+ players and net points on the top boards. Their huge weakness is an astonishing lack of strength in depth - when they lose matches, it is normally on the bottom boards. Both teams were missing players through clashes with other chess events, but because we have better strength in depth than Wiltshire, the clashes seemed to hurt us less than them. Indeed, I had 24 willing players for this match, even after some had to drop out late on. My thanks to all of you. As it turned out, Hampshire had the only 200+ player, which was something of a surprise. Last year, Richard Webb scored a fine win on top board. This year it was Paul Cooksey's turn. The final position is quite neat - and an unusual case of R+RP beating R+connected-passed-pawns. If I remember correctly... W: Kf2 Re1 Ps g3,h6 B: Kd2 Rf3 Pa2 See if you can work out what the last couple of moves were! Meanwhile, I lost on board 3. Happily, the team followed Paul's lead rather than mine. The near-whitewash on the bottom boards conceals some hard-fought games. The Wiltshire players included a number of improving youngsters. Congratulations all. Dominic Tunks Match Captain |

This, the first match of the season, was
today.
The bad news is that we had two players not turn up on the day. This is sad, not only because it left two Devon players without a game and with a wasted day, not only because it meant we started 2-0 down against a very good side, but also because I had 18 players available for 16 places and had turned two down. The good news is that, despite this, we improved on our score against Devon last year by 16.7%. Of course, that still left us well and truly beaten (12.5-3.5), but there were some excellent games played. Dominic Tunks |

Following on from the Hampshire U180
team's excellent win against a strong Buckinghamshire side on 26th November,
it was the turn of our Open team to notch up a victory against Somerset on
3rd December.
Somerset are captained by Jack Rudd. Jack is something of a phenomenon - on and off the board. It is hard to believe his grade is "only" 207 - I suspect he sometimes gets careless against weaker opposition (although he brushed me aside with ridiculous ease last time we played). Give him a strong opponent - and, courtesy of Paul Cooksey, we did just that - and Jack is formidable. Behind Jack, Somerset were much weaker than usual and dropped by 20 grading points a board to 185 on 2 and then 165 on 3, against me. We were, in fact, clearly stronger on paper from board 3 down. What counts though is results on the day - as Bucks had found out to their cost! But 10½ -5½ was convincing enough - our first victory against Somerset for 5 years - well played all. If your game was a good one, or instructive, or enjoyable, Graham Stuart would love to hear from you. See some of your team-mates' efforts at HampshireChess.co.uk, where you will also find details of how to contact Graham, the results of all the teams that Hampshire runs, Captains' contact details and a whole lot more. I have realised that a key line of my analysis in my game simply lost my Queen - a fact that was not exposed because my opponent chose another line. My opponent's mistakes up to then were certainly instructive, but now I don't know (without further analysis) whether what I did was any better! Once I'd won a pawn, I lost the thread completely and my mistakes then would also be instructive - except at that point my opponent did in fact blunder his Queen!! Finally, I would like to give a (thankful and apologetic) mention to Keven Lamb. Kev said early on that he could play, but with the question mark over whether we would have enough players to run the B team match it was never certain wither Kev would get a game. But he kept himself available if needed. Late on, Bill Purkiss dropped out and it looked like Kev would get a game. But Bill found a replacement for himself (something which, I have to say, I am grateful for - things like that make the Captain's job much more pleasant) and Kev was back in reserve. Dominic Tunks |

Well it's just as well teeth have skin -
or do I mean that skin has teeth?! This was a roller-coaster match with
several games where the result was perhaps not the "right one"
from the position. Not least on board 1, where Jeremy collapsed against me
in time pressure, from a fine position.
What eventually separated the teams was the defaults. We lost a match (by one point) to Cornwall in November 2002 because we defaulted on 2 boards. I had been worried that this one would go the same way. Although Peter Marshall reduced my deficit to just two players late on, Cornwall had a full team. However, Cornwall lost one player on Friday and two more on Saturday morning, leaving us one up - the 1 we won by. In effect, Peter Marshall won us the match. While we will take the win and this keeps us on course to finish second - maybe even joint first - this is no way to decide matches. Teams should have 16 players. My thanks go to those who played. And Peter - who of course did not know until Saturday morning that he'd be travelling for no game. And Steve LeFevre, who actually did travel for no game because his opponent did not show up.
