2003 - 2004 West of England County Matches Analysis

This season saw a few changes to the Hampshire team, with one being the B team returning to 16 players, rather than 12. We never actually fielded 16 players though, due to prior agreements with other teams about how many players to use - but the thought was there! Another change was the improved team, with the average grade for the A team rising to 156 from 151 which is the highest it's been since the 1996 / 1997 season (A team average grade 182!)

Unfortunately this only resulted in 1 more match point for the A team, with 2 draws from 5 games. although we did finish in 5th rather than 6th place in the Harold Meek competition. It's not all doom and gloom though, as the Hampshire A team were extremely competitive, with two of the three losses being by half a point and one point respectively. To be honest it would not have been a surprise if we had won four games!

This all bears well for next season, as if we continue this upward trend I am sure we will score a lot more points. Looking at how we can do this, I analysed the average grade per board for Hampshire compared to our opponents (I need to get out more!). As can be seen from this Hampshire are relatively weak at the top, but strong at the bottom. This is not meant to be critical about our top boards, it's just that you cannot get away from the fact that they are normally heavily outgraded. The good news is that we have more strength in depth than other counties, so after board 7 we start to outgrade our opponents. I am not sure how we can solve this problem, as the majority of the 190 + players that used to play for Hampshire now tend to play in the 4NCLand there is only so much weekend chess people are able to play - so the county matches are affected by this.

The B team only had the three games, with one being an Under 150 Match against Dorset. Two wins and a loss to Devon was a good effort and this meant we qualified straight to the quarter finals of the BCF Under 150 championship.  There we met a strong Greater Manchester side and were easily beaten - maybe next year?

The under 125 team lost their qualifier to Devon and will also have to look to next season.

As always the Players Performance is in points scored order, which favours the players that play the most games This is not an obvious ploy to get me to the top of the list, but as I did play the most West of England / BCF games this season you may well think so! Seriously though, my season was not bad, but was by no means the best by a Hampshire player. For this you have to look at the juniors Dominic persuaded to play, both Peter Roberson and Oliver Payne had an excellent season. They both managed to beat strong players and hopefully will continue to play for Hampshire for a number of years.

Other players that performed well were Gillian Moore, Khaled Esmat, Jon Young and Matthew Ludbrook. Players who performed in excess of 200 are graded red.

Once again it is thanks to Dominic Tunks for captaining the County Teams and don't forget, if you have a game from the season which is worth publishing, send to me at News@HampshireChess.co.uk
