2001 - 2002 West of England County Matches Analysis

As a personal reflection on the season, it was certainly good to see Hampshire not defaulting many games this season and in the last few matches, Dominic had more players wanting to play, than he had places. One of the reasons for this was Fraser McLeod taking over the running of the Chiltern League, which enabled Dominic to spend more time organising the West of England matches. This is not to take anything away from Dominic, who managed to give most players who wanted to play for the County, a game. It was also noticeable that the team had excellent team spirit, which is not always the case in other team activities. The e-mailing of the team list worked, as did the request at the matches of who was available for the next match.

Organising the County team is a thankless task, so I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dominic for doing this over the last few years. I am sure the other players are as grateful as me, in that we now have a well organised structure and Hampshire Chess seems to be on a upward trend.

Hopefully next year the team will be strengthened to the extent that we are challenging for the Harold Meek and Wayling Cup trophies again. Somerset won the Harold Meek competition this year (A teams) and Devon won the Wayling Cup (B teams).

The Team Information below shows how we performed as a team this year, along with some analysis on the strength of the two teams. To put this in context in the 1995/1996 season the Hampshire A team had an average grade of 189, against this years 150. All county teams have seen a drop in strength in the last few years, due to the 4NCL, but there are probably a few stronger Hampshire players out there. Mind you, if we see the return of these players, then I won't be able to get into the team - so maybe we're better off as we are.

Although only based on a maximum of 6 games and in most cases less, this Players Performance table shows how the Hampshire players have done in the West of England County matches this season. The order is shown in how many points scored and then grading performance. As you can see Michael Krawczuk probably had the best season, which also reflects his play in the Portsmouth League. Other players that had a good season are Dominic Tunks (it's always hard to play on board 1), Stephen D Le Fevre,  Harold Shelley, Fraser McLeod, Khaled Esmat, David Hoskins, Graham Stuart and Oliver Payne.

Don't forget, if you have a game from the season, which is worth publishing, send to me at the normal address.
